In The IndependentJune 9th 2008 The Independent gave Alfie a glowing review for his most recent album, La Passione, this weekend.
Here’s that four-star review in full:
‘When the Royal Opera drafted Alfie Boe into their apprentice-singer scheme, little did they know how short his apprenticeship would be, because his career suddenly went stratospheric. He now guests at ENO and Glyndebourne while continuing his life as a crossover superstar, and it’s that side of his work we hear on this CD. But even when singing ‘O Sole Mio’ and ‘Funiculi Funicula’ he still sounds fabulous.’
La Passione is in stores now, and Alfie has a string of live appearances lined up for this summer – read all about them in the Tour Dates area.

Der RosenkavalierMay 23rd 2008 It's been quite a month for Alfie so far... He's sung at Windsor Castle for the wedding of Peter Phillips and Autumn Kelly in front of the entire Royal Family, garnered some fantastic reviews for The Merry Widow, and of course celebrated the birth of his daughter, Grace.
And now Alfie is delighted to be singing The Italian Tenor for selected performances of David McVicar's new production of Der Rosenkavalier, for the English National Opera.
He sung the role for the Opening Night of the celebrated production, and will also be appearing on 24th, 28th and 31st May. For more information on the London premiere of this highly-anticipated production, and for ticketing information, visit the ENO site HERE.

Success All RoundMay 19th 2008 With the birth of his beautiful daughter and a critically acclaimed run at London's Coliseum drawing to an end, things couldn't be going much better for Alfie. Below is a selection of fine quotes about Alfie's charismatic performance as Camille in 'The Merry Widow' and to read more about Alfie's new-born baby head HERE .
"Alfie Boe (as Camille de Rosillon) puts his athleticism to good use for his portrayal of the secret lover and, evidently, his popular albums do not harm Boe's ability to sing and act on the opera stage." - Agnes Kory, Musical Criticism.com, 29th April 2008.
"In that respect Alfie Boe, in league with Fiona Murphy's Valencienne, stole the show as a fresh-faced Camille, bounding with puppy-like enthusiasm and ardour, and singing his declarations of love with real fervour." - Geoffrey Norris, The Telegraph, 28th April 2008.
"Those factors [charisma and sexiness] are certainly present in Alfie Boe's Camille, vocally resplendent and winningly performed..." - George Hall, The Stage, 30th April 2008.
"The vocal honors of the evening go to young tenor Alfie Boe as the rakish Count Camille de Rossillon. He has recently been dabbling in rather dull crossover discs. On the impressive showing here, it would be a treat if he could get back to more challenging repertoire." - Warwick Thompson, Bloomberg News, 30th April 2008.
"The biggest success of the evening was Copley's take on Camille de Rosillon (sung by Alfie Boe), whose desperation to get laid, preferably by Baron Zeta's wife, Valencienne (the lovely Fiona Murphy), had him falling over himself like an eager puppy.” - Edward Seckerson, The Independent, 1st May 2008.

Alfie at the Royal WeddingMay 19th 2008 This weekend saw Windsor Castle host the Royal wedding of Peter Phillips (the queen’s eldest grandson) and his Canadian bride, Autumn Kelly. Alfie was delighted to be asked to sing at the wedding and gave a solo performance of Ave Maria and Panis Angelicus. To read all about the wedding head HERE.

Amazing Grace!May 12th 2008 Alfie Boe and his wife Sarah are delighted to announce the birth of their first child, Grace. Their daughter was born on Friday the 9th of May at 16.13 and weighed a healthy 7lbs10.5 oz.
"It's so humbling to be a father, totally amazing. I'm so proud of both Sarah and baby Grace," said Alfie shortly after the birth.
On Thursday 8th May Alfie was attending The Classical Brit Awards when he received a text from Sarah saying that she was in the early stages of labour.
Alfie has been on tenterhooks for weeks hoping he wouldn’t miss the birth, or a performance. Only a week ago his wife came to watch the production and during the opera started having strong twinges. Alfie exited stage left as soon as the curtain came down and whisked his wife to hospital still in full costume. No such drama accompanied the actual birth but apparently little Grace has lungs as big as her fathers. Go here to take a look at the latest story about it in the Daily Mail. | |

Quick HelloMay 1st 2008 Hi Everybody,
Sorry not to have written sooner. I've had a crazy last couple of weeks! Opening the Merry Widow at the Coliseum has been amazing. I'm really loving every minute of performances - it's such a great show and such a fantastic cast. I feel very fortunate. Also this week I had the honor of performing at Buckingham Palace for HRH the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall in aid of Children in the Arts, a charity I am a proud ambassador for. It was my first time at the palace and was a truly incredible, unforgettable evening. And a terrific honor as well to perform alongside a host of amazing artists including Renee Fleming, Sir Ian McKellen, Jude Law and Jeremy Irons. I'm looking forward to the Classical Brits next week and want say thank you again to all who voted for me. Hope all is well with all of you.
Much Love,
Alfie

Alfie in 'The Merry Widow'April 30th 2008 As of the 26th April Alfie officially began his run with the English National Opera as Camille in 'The Merry Widow' at London's Coliseum. The opera is a work by composer, Franz Lehar, and tells the story of a rich widow and her attempts to find a husband.
Previews are over and the press is out and - not surprisingly - the production is going down a storm and so is Alfie. Renowned theatre magazine, 'The Stage' called Alfie's Camille, "vocally resplendent and winningly performed." For a full version of the review click HERE
Tickets are still available for this brilliant production, to book your own head RIGHT HERE.

New Alfie interview, Part IIApril 17th 2008 As promised, here is Part II of our exclusive recent catch-up with Alfie:
How does it feel to be nominated for two Classical Brit Awards?
I am very excited; it is a great honour to be put forward for the awards. I’m up against a lot of other good artists, and I think we all stand a good chance.
Concerts, operas, awards… Do you ever get to go home?
I’m actually at home now! It’s very brief though, I have to go back to London tomorrow for rehearsals, same at the weekend, and then I’ve got another concert during the week.
Any chance of a holiday?
I’m trying to fit something in; a trip to America later in the year perhaps. I love backpacking and going trekking in the mountains. There is a beautiful mountain range called the Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho, where you can hike to about 13,000 feet and come across these beautiful alpine lakes. There’s nobody around for miles; you can dive straight into the lakes and it just takes your breath away. It’s absolutely gorgeous.
What music do you listen to in your spare time?
I do listen to a lot of opera actually; it’s educational, and you learn so much by listening to it. Though you mustn’t try and impersonate – you have to discover your own style. I’ve been listening to lots of 80s music too – getting my 80s fix! I got Level 42 out this morning, UB40 as well. I’ve been making 80s playlists, but I’m not getting the outfits out again - hideous outfits! I remember I had one in particular that was a purple paisley shirt. It was awful.
You can also read a new blog about the final week of Merry Widow rehearsals on Alfie’s MySpace now.

New Alfie interview, Part IApril 7th 2008 We caught up with Alfie the other day, just before he took to the stage to perform with the Philharmonia.
Here is Part I of our exclusive catch-up with him; stay tuned for Part II coming next week…
How has 2008 been for you so far?
2008 has been really fantastic so far. There’s been a lot to take on board, and I’ve got a crazy year ahead. Rehearsals for The Merry Widow are now in full swing; it opens on 26th April. The dancing is fantastic; I’ve danced in some shows in the past, but it’s not something I’ll try to make a living out of! It’s a very traditional production. Lots of directors try and be clever and come up with a different angle, but this one is really traditional; big waltzes and beautiful costumes, top hat and tails, gorgeous ball gowns and a lovely set. We’ve got an amazing director, John Copley, who directs for the music.
How are rehearsals going?
I’ve done three weeks already, and we’ve got another three weeks to go. Plus, there were two weeks rehearsal before I joined, so we’ve had about eight weeks – it’s quite a lengthy process. We’re rehearsing in a space in West Hampstead right now, and we’ll be on stage in the actual theatre in the last week.
What was the last opera you did?
Kismet, last year, was the last performance I did, but the last opera was Così Fan Tutte at the beginning of 2007 in Strasbourg. So I’ve been away from it for quite a while, but I never stopped doing opera: it’s what I trained for. I always want to continue with live performances, and it’s wonderful to be able to do that: to appear in concert, then perform in an opera the next week. I’ll also be performing in Electra at the Royal Opera House in August / September, and then I’ll be doing La Bohème with the English National Opera at the end of the year.

New blogMarch 31st 2008 Hi Everybody,
Firstly I want to apologize for leaving it so long to write. I’ve been crazy busy starting rehearsals for The Merry Widow at English National Opera which opens Saturday, April 26th. Things are going really well - love working with the director John Copley - he’s such a genius. Of course, I’d love to see as many of you as possible at the Coliseum. I’ll be the one with the dodgy moustache!
Also looking forward to my concert this Wednesday, April 2nd with the Philharmonia in Reading. I’ll be singing some of my favorite opera classics as well as some the Neopolitan music I love from La Passione. Should be good fun. Also performing gala concerts with the Philharmonia in Canterbury and Croydon next week.
As my management won’t let me forget to tell you: it’s not too late to vote for Onward for best album in the Classical Brit Awards this year. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your votes and support. It means the world.
The link is:

Enjoying the spring weather when it’s not raining. When I’m not racing around between rehearsals and performance I’m chilling out at home trying to learn some Elvis songs on my guitar. Let you know how it goes.
Hope all is well with every one of you.
Lots of Love,
Alfie
